Two years ago today, I never dreamed that I could write and perform my own music, even after co-writing music and performing it professionally for nearly 20 years.
A year and 10 months ago, I was attacked on the streets by a strange man, and to try to deal with what happened to me I sat down and started writing for the first time I still said I couldn’t do it.
A year and 4 months ago, I applied for funding from Initiative Musik to make “STAND,” after cobbling together demos of three songs. I told myself it was a shot in the dark and would never happen.
A year and 2 months ago, I got the funding, and believed that they had made some sort of mistake. I thought there was no possible way anyone believed I could pull this off.
Today, I release my debut album “STAND”. I wrote the album at the beginning of 2021, recorded it in June, shot a video in August, and released singles in October, November and January, the whole time gradually realizing that the nagging voice saying “you cannot possibly do this” was actually wrong the whole time.
I won’t say that I’ve overcome my imposter syndrome, but this is a massive step. I’m so proud of the album and so grateful to all of the women who have participated in creating this work of art that means so much to me. Today is just the beginning.
“STAND” was produced by Julia Borelli and Maya Postepski and released on RIP Ben Lee Records. The album cover was designed by Gabriella Seemann, with photos by Petra Valdimarsdottir. And of course thanks to Initiative Musik for funding the venture.
